The Shaolin Temple, nestled in the forests of Mount Song in Dengfeng, is one of the most famous cultural sites in all of China and the spiritual birthplace of both Chan (Zen) Buddhism and Shaolin kung fu. The temple is the centerpiece of a wider scenic area that also includes the broader Mount Song range, and combining it with a hike up Mount Song itself is a popular full-day option. Arrive early to beat the tour buses, especially on weekends and Chinese public holidays, when crowds at the kung fu show can be dense. Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and bottled water are musts, as the distances between sub-sites are significant.
