The lighting scheme is the heart of the experience. As darkness falls, the entire West Zone is illuminated in coordinated layers: warm lanterns glow along the lanes, the rooflines of the houses and bridges are traced with soft uplighting, and the canal-side facades are lit from below so that the whole zone takes on a warm amber tone rather than the cooler, more literal lighting typical of city streets. The signature way to experience the night West Zone is from the water. Wooden rowboats run along the main canal after dark, giving passengers a slow, lantern-lit passage between the lit-up facades and under the stone bridges, an experience widely considered the most evocative single thing to do in Wuzhen. The combination of the boats' slow pace, the quiet of the oars, and the lit-up reflections on the water gives the ride a contemplative quality that the daytime version of the same trip does not quite match.

A typical night tour takes an hour or two of walking, longer with a boat ride and a stop for dinner or drinks at one of the canal-side cafes. Because the West Zone is designed around its nighttime atmosphere, most overnight visitors in Wuzhen plan their day around being back in the zone for the lighting, making the night tour the natural centerpiece of an evening in the town.
