Tianyou Peak is one of the most celebrated viewpoints in the Mount Wuyi UNESCO World Heritage Site in Fujian province, standing at the heart of the scenic area above a bend of the Nine-Bend Stream. For most visitors, it is the single essential climb of a Wuyishan trip, and reaching the summit terrace is rewarded with the iconic panorama that has come to represent the Wuyi landscape in paintings, photographs, and the imagination of travelers for centuries.

The peak sits at the northern end of the sixth bend of the river, in the geographic center of the scenic area, which is why the view from its top is so comprehensive. The climb leads up a series of stone steps cut into the red danxia rock, passing pavilions, small shrines, and tea terraces along the way, and the final stretch opens onto a stone platform perched above the surrounding peaks. From here, the Nine-Bend Stream appears as a glittering ribbon winding among sheer cliffs, with the layered peaks of the Wuyi range folding one behind another toward the horizon in a scene of extraordinary beauty.

The name Tianyou, which can be read as a heavenly tour, captures the sense of walking among the peaks as if visiting the heavens, and on a misty morning the summit really does feel suspended above the clouds, with islands of rock emerging from a sea of white below. The light changes quickly here, and photographers prize the early hours, when the rising sun breaks over the ridgelines and the river glints far below. Even on a busy day, the scale of the view makes the climb feel worthwhile.

The ascent is steep but short, manageable for most visitors in reasonable shape, and there are resting points along the way for those who want to take it slowly. Comfortable shoes, water, and sun protection are worth bringing, since the upper section of the trail is exposed to the sun. Tianyou Peak pairs naturally with a morning on the Nine-Bend Stream and an afternoon among the da hong pao tea terraces, and it is the viewpoint around which a classic Wuyishan itinerary is built. For first-time visitors to Mount Wuyi, it is the climb not to miss.
