쌍탑사 소개

The Twin Pagoda Temple, formally known as Yongzuo Temple, is one of the most recognizable landmarks of Taiyuan, its pair of tall brick pagodas forming the symbol of the city and the central motif of its official emblem. Located in the southern part of Taiyuan, the temple has long served as a visual anchor for travelers approaching the city and remains one of the most beloved cultural sites for local residents. For visitors, it offers a peaceful half-day stop that combines architecture, calligraphy, and garden landscapes in a compact and photogenic setting.

The temple was founded around the turn of the seventeenth century, in the middle of the Ming dynasty Wanli reign, and takes its popular name from the two tall pagodas that rise side by side within the compound. Built of brick in the classic octagonal, multi-eaved form, the pagodas are tall enough to be visible from many points across the southern city and have been carefully restored over the centuries. Inside, visitors can climb the internal staircases of at least one of the pagodas for sweeping views over the rooftops of Taiyuan and the wider plain, with the surrounding mountains visible in the distance.

Beyond the pagodas, the temple compound preserves a sequence of historic halls, courtyards, and gardens. The main halls contain Buddhist statues and devotional objects, while a renowned collection of carved stone stele preserves examples of fine calligraphy from across the centuries, including copies of works by famous masters. The grounds are planted with centuries-old trees, ornamental shrubs, and seasonal flowers, making the temple particularly beautiful in late spring and early summer when peonies and other blooms fill the courtyards. The atmosphere is calm and contemplative, with resident monks and small groups of worshippers giving the site a lived religious character rather than a purely tourist one.

A visit typically takes an hour or two, including a climb of one of the pagodas, a slow wander through the gardens, and time to appreciate the calligraphy collection. The temple is easy to reach from the city center and is best combined with the adjacent Twin Pagoda Park, a larger green space that extends the historical setting into a pleasant walking landscape. Spring and autumn are the most rewarding seasons to come, when the weather suits outdoor exploration and the gardens are at their best. For anyone building a portrait of Taiyuan from its historic landmarks, the Twin Pagoda Temple is one of the most essential and most atmospheric stops.
