천룡산 석굴

The Tianlongshan Grottoes are a series of Buddhist cave temples carved into the limestone slopes of Mount Tianlong, about forty kilometers southwest of Taiyuan. Created between the Northern Qi and Tang dynasties, they rank among the most culturally significant rock-carved Buddhist sites in northern China and are celebrated in particular for the grace of their sculpted figures. For travelers interested in religious art and ancient stone carving, they make an excellent pairing with the nearby Jinci complex and a rewarding day trip from Taiyuan.

The site was developed from the sixth century onward, when the Northern Qi ruler Gao Huan established a summer palace in the area and patronized the construction of temples and caves. Over the following centuries, devotees sponsored the carving of cave shrines and statues across the mountain, creating a complex of more than two dozen grottoes distributed across a peak and a ridge. Many of the finest sculptures were carved during the Northern Qi and Sui periods, with further additions in the Tang, and the site developed into one of the most important regional centers of Buddhist art in north China.

The sculptures of Tianlongshan are renowned for a distinctive style that combines robust Northern Qi forms with the more fluid, sensuous lines of Tang figure carving. Images of Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and flying celestial beings display a refinement that art historians consider among the highest achievements of the period, and the figures are set within carefully carved architectural frames that evoke wooden temple architecture in stone. Tragically, many of the heads and finer sculptures were removed in the early twentieth century and dispersed into collections abroad, but ongoing research, returns, and reconstructions have allowed visitors to appreciate the original artistry once again.

Most visitors spend half a day at the site, including the climb up to the main cave groups, the small site museum, and the panoramic viewpoints across the surrounding mountains. A modern visitor center and a circular road now make access much easier than in the past, with shuttle buses carrying visitors between the upper and lower cave groups. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons to visit, when the forested mountain is green and the temperatures are comfortable. Combining Tianlongshan with Jinci in a single day is one of the most rewarding heritage itineraries from Taiyuan, placing the sculpture of the caves in dialogue with the wooden architecture of the temple complex.
