한산사

Hanshan Temple sits on the western edge of Suzhou beside the Grand Canal and Maple Bridge, a small Chan Buddhist temple that has acquired an outsized place in Chinese literary culture. Founded in the sixth century during the Liang dynasty, the temple was renamed in the Tang dynasty after the monk Hanshan, a legendary poet-ascetic whose verses are still read today. The complex visitors see now is largely a Qing dynasty rebuilding on a centuries-old site, with later restorations adding halls, a bell tower, and a sutra library.

What made Hanshan Temple famous across East Asia is a single poem. In the mid-eighth century, the Tang poet Zhang Ji moored his boat at Maple Bridge and composed Night-Mooring beside Maple Bridge, whose lines about a traveler kept awake by the midnight bell ringing from Hanshan Temple outside the city walls became one of the most quoted verses in the Chinese tradition. The poem is on the school curriculum in China, Korea, and Japan, and for more than a thousand years the temple has drawn pilgrims eager to hear the bell that Zhang Ji described.

The temple itself is modest in scale but richly atmospheric. The main hall enshrines smiling statues of Hanshan and his fellow monk Shide, unusual figures in Chinese Buddhist iconography for their humble, almost comic appearance. A later pavilion houses a copy of the temple bell; the Tang original was lost centuries ago, and a replacement was cast in Japan and donated in the early twentieth century as a gesture of cultural friendship. The stele gallery preserves calligraphic rubbings of Zhang Ji's poem by celebrated hands across dynasties.

Hanshan Temple is also a working religious site, and on Chinese New Year's Eve thousands of visitors gather to strike the bell one hundred and eight times, a ritual believed in Buddhist cosmology to cleanse the one hundred and eight worldly anxieties of the old year. For daytime visitors, the surrounding canal-side streets, particularly the Maple Bridge scenic area, pair naturally with the temple, and a stop here is the easiest way to understand why Suzhou's poets so often described their city as a place of water, bridges, and distant bells.
