샤오싱 고성 소개
Shaoxing Ancient City is the historic core of one of eastern China's oldest continuously inhabited cities, a low-rise, canal-laced district of white-walled, grey-tiled courtyard houses that has preserved much of its pre-modern urban fabric despite the rapid redevelopment of the surrounding region. Bounded by the remains of the old city wall and threaded by a network of navigable waterways, the old city is one of the most atmospheric places in the Yangtze Delta to experience the urban landscape of late-imperial Jiangnan.
The defining element of the ancient city is water. Canals run parallel to many of the principal streets, crossed by arched stone bridges and lined by the riverside houses, workshops, and small temples that have characterized the city since the Ming and Qing dynasties. The wupeng boat, a traditional black-awned sculling boat once used for everyday transport, remains in operation as both a tourist experience and, in places, a functional craft, and a slow boat ride remains one of the most effective ways to understand why Shaoxing has long been called "the city floating on water." Key historic quarters within the ancient city include the Cangqiao Straight Street historic district, the Lu Xun Native Place district, and the areas surrounding the Bazi Bridge and the former city gates.
The old city's significance is also intellectual. Shaoxing was for centuries a center of Jiangnan literati culture, producing scholars, calligraphers, and officials far out of proportion to its size, and the density of historical residences, academies, and gardens within the old walls reflects that tradition. The integration of daily life, craft workshops, local rice-wine breweries, and small restaurants into the historic fabric gives the district a lived-in quality that distinguishes it from more heavily restored water towns elsewhere in the region.
For international visitors, the ancient city rewards unhurried exploration on foot and by boat, with most major attractions, including the Lu Xun Native Place, Shen Garden, and Cangqiao Straight Street, within a thirty-minute walk of each other. Travelers typically use a central hotel as a base and explore the network of canals, bridges, and lanes over two or three relaxed days.
