삼미서옥

The Sanwei Study, or "Three-Flavor Study," is a former traditional private school within the Lu Xun Native Place district of central Shaoxing, where the young Lu Xun studied under a strict Confucian tutor for five years in the late nineteenth century. As the literal setting for one of the most widely read essays in the modern Chinese-language curriculum, the study is among the most visited individual sites within the larger Lu Xun memorial complex.

The schoolroom itself is a small traditional Shaoxing courtyard house, with the main hall arranged much as it would have been during Lu Xun's childhood. Wooden desks and stools are set out in rows facing the teaching table, and the desk traditionally identified as Lu Xun's own, on which he is said to have carved the character for "early" as a personal reminder to never be late, is marked for identification. The walls are hung with period calligraphy and the instructional scrolls that would have formed the curriculum of a late-Qing Confucian school, when students memorized the Confucian classics and practiced brush writing for much of the day.

The literary significance of the site is rooted in the essay "From Baicao Garden to the Three-Flavor Study," in which Lu Xun described his childhood transition from the freedom of the family garden to the discipline of formal schooling. The essay is taught in primary and middle schools across China, and for most domestic visitors the study is recognizable from the moment they enter, with the layout, the desks, and even the small back garden matching descriptions they have read and memorized. For international visitors, the site is best understood as a window into both the writer's biography and the broader tradition of Confucian primary education in late-imperial China.

The Sanwei Study sits within a short walk of the Zhou family residence, the Baicao Garden, and the Lu Xun Memorial Hall, and the site is typically visited as part of a single circuit through the Lu Xun Native Place district. Combined with Shen Garden and the Cangqiao Straight Street, it forms the core of a half-day walking itinerary through the literary and architectural heritage of central Shaoxing.
