상호도협 소개

Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge is the first and most accessible section of Tiger Leaping Gorge on the Shangri-La side of the Jinsha River, where the channel squeezes between Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain to its narrowest point. It is the section most commonly included in day trips from Shangri-La or Lijiang, and the only part of the gorge that can be visited without an overnight commitment.

The signature viewpoint sits above a cluster of massive boulders mid-river, the largest of which is the Tiger Leaping Stone of local legend. According to the tale, a tiger used this boulder as a stepping-stone to leap from one bank to the other while fleeing a hunter, giving the gorge its name. From the viewing platforms, the entire flow of the upper Yangtze compresses through a gap of only twenty or thirty meters, and the force of the water sends columns of spray high into the air, especially in late summer when monsoon rains swell the current.

A short stepped path descends from the parking area to the lower platforms, where visitors stand almost level with the rapids. The descent takes about fifteen minutes and the climb back up somewhat longer at altitude; fences and railings are well maintained along the route, and small rest pavilions provide shade.

For independent travelers, Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge is the best option for those with limited time or without the equipment for the multi-day high trail. It pairs naturally with a drive along the gorge road to Qiaotou, or with a visit to Haba Snow Mountain Village. Arrive early in the morning for quieter viewing platforms and softer light for photography.
