Houhai Village, also known as Tenghai Fishing Village, is a small coastal settlement at the southern end of Haitang Bay, sitting right next to the ferry pier for Wuzhizhou Island. Over the past decade it has evolved from a quiet fishing community into one of Sanya's most distinctive hangouts, drawing a young, laid-back crowd of surfers, backpackers, and independent travelers who come for the slow pace, the waves, and the seafood. For visitors who want a break from Sanya's big resort complexes, it is one of the most rewarding corners of the coast.

The village sits on a small bay with a wave break that is well suited to beginner and intermediate surfers, and surf schools and board rental shops line the narrow main street. The surf culture is the defining feature of modern Houhai: the water is warm year-round, the waves are forgiving, and the atmosphere in the lineup is friendlier and less competitive than at better-known breaks elsewhere. Even travelers who never plan to stand on a board tend to enjoy the scene, with surfers coming and going on the beach, small cafes and bars spilling onto the sand, and a constant backdrop of music and conversation through the evening.

Beyond the surf, Houhai retains enough of its fishing-village character to feel distinct from the resort coast. Working boats still operate from the waterfront, and the village is known across Sanya for its fresh seafood, with small restaurants along the main street cooking the day's catch to order. The maze of narrow lanes hides guesthouses, noodle shops, coffee places, and small bars, and the pace of life slows noticeably once you step off the main road. The proximity to the Wuzhizhou ferry pier means the village is often the first or last stop on a day trip to the island.

Reaching Houhai is straightforward, with taxis and ride-hailing services making the drive from downtown Sanya or Yalong Bay in roughly half an hour, and many visitors combine it with a Wuzhizhou trip or a day exploring Haitang Bay. The village is best enjoyed at a slow pace: a morning surf lesson, a long seafood lunch, an afternoon on the beach, and an evening in the bars. For independent travelers in particular, Houhai offers a taste of a different Sanya from the one packaged inside the big resorts.
