취안저우 개원사 소개

Standing on West Street in the heart of Quanzhou's Licheng district, Kaiyuan Temple is Fujian's largest Buddhist temple complex and one of the most historically significant monasteries on China's southeast coast. Founded in 686 CE during the Tang dynasty under Empress Wu Zetian, the temple is now more than thirteen centuries old and remains an active place of worship, its halls filled with drifting incense and the murmur of sutras. For travelers exploring Quanzhou's UNESCO World Heritage heritage, Kaiyuan Temple is the natural anchor.

The complex is best known for its twin stone pagodas, the Zhenguo and Renshou, which rise at the east and west of the courtyard and have become the visual emblem of Quanzhou itself. Both octagonal towers date in their present form from the Song dynasty, and their elaborate carvings of Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and Indian-influenced mythological figures hint at the cosmopolitan exchanges that defined medieval Quanzhou. Walking around their bases, visitors can spend hours tracing panels that blend Chinese iconography with motifs carried in from across the Indian Ocean.

Inside the main halls, the architectural details reward close attention. The columns of the Mahavira Hall feature carved bases adorned with Hindu-influenced designs, a quiet reminder that Tamil merchants once maintained a thriving community in Song and Yuan Quanzhou. Wooden brackets, painted beams, and a famed banyan that grows within the compound layer Tang foundations with Song structure, Ming restoration, and ongoing care. A small museum on the grounds displays sacred relics recovered from the pagodas, including miniature stupas and sutra containers.

Kaiyuan Temple forms a core component of the 2021 UNESCO World Heritage property "Quanzhou: Emporium of the World for Song and Yuan China." Visiting the temple is straightforward because it sits directly on West Street, where cafes, traditional snack stalls, and souvenir shops line the approach. Travelers typically combine a stop here with a walk through the surrounding old quarter, where the rhythms of contemporary Minnan life carry on within a setting shaped by centuries of Buddhist practice, maritime commerce, and cultural exchange.
