A-Ma Temple is the oldest of the major Chinese temples in Macau and one of the most important historic sites in the city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Historic Centre of Macau. Dedicated to Mazu, the sea goddess revered across the southern Chinese coast and the wider maritime world of the South China Sea, the temple sits at the foot of Barra Hill on the southwestern tip of the Macau Peninsula, where it has welcomed sailors, fishermen, and travelers for centuries.
The temple predates the arrival of the Portuguese and is closely tied to the origin of the name Macau itself. According to tradition, when Portuguese navigators first asked local residents for the name of the place, the answer they received was a reference to the temple of the sea goddess, maa-gok, and from that exchange the Portuguese form Macau was derived. Whatever the exact history of that encounter, the temple stands as a reminder that the deep identity of the place rests on a Chinese coastal culture that long predates the European presence.
The temple complex is laid out across a series of terraces and pavilions that climb the lower slopes of Barra Hill, with stone gateways, prayer halls, and memorial archways fitted into the natural topography. Ancient banyan trees, cloud-curling incense burners, and rows of hanging spiral incense coils give the grounds a richly atmospheric character, and the combination of carved stone, painted woodwork, and natural landscape makes the site one of the most harmonious pieces of traditional religious architecture in the city. Each of the halls is dedicated to a different aspect of the goddess or her companion deities.
For visitors, A-Ma Temple is the natural starting point for a walking tour of the Historic Centre of Macau, which leads uphill from Barra Hill through the layered history of the old city. The temple itself rewards a slow visit, and its combination of antiquity, architecture, and living religious practice makes it one of the most rewarding of the UNESCO sites in the city and an essential stop on any first visit to Macau.

The A-Ma Temple, also called the Tin Hau Temple, stands at the foot of Barra Hill at the southern tip of the Macau Peninsula and is among the city's oldest temples, its main hall built in the Ming dynasty (some say 1488) and dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu (Tin Hau). Set against the hill, it comprises the Zhengjue Lin, the Hongren Hall and a Guanyin shrine, blending Fujian-Guangdong temple style with Macau's local character. Legend holds that when the Portuguese first landed and asked the name of the place by the temple they heard "Mage" and rendered it "Macau," making the A-Ma Temple the source of the city's name and the starting point of its East-West encounter.
관람 안내: Passing through the memorial arch and climbing the stone steps, one visits each hall in turn amid curling incense, hanging spiral coils and red blessing ribbons; beside the temple a stone relief of a Western ship tells the story of Mazu protecting seafarers. On the twenty-third day of the third lunar month, the goddess's birthday, grand rites and opera fill the temple, the most vivid moment to experience Macau's living folk faith.
