나겐라 고개 소개
Nagenla Pass is the high mountain crossing on the road between the county of Damxung and Lake Namtso, and for most travelers it marks the dramatic threshold between the river valleys of the Lhasa region and the open expanse of the Changtang plateau. At more than five thousand meters above sea level, the pass is one of the highest points reached on the standard excursion to Namtso and is an unforgettable piece of the journey in its own right.
The environment at the pass is stark and elemental. The wind is cold and constant, the air is thin enough that any movement demands effort, and in every direction the ridges of the Nyenchen Tanglha range roll toward the horizon under a sky that, at this altitude, seems to sit almost within reach. Strings of prayer flags stretch between cairns and poles at the summit, set there by travelers and pilgrims in keeping with the Tibetan understanding of mountain passes as sacred thresholds where the traveler pauses to honor the spirits of the place.
The pass is also a practical acclimatization milestone. The altitude here is significantly higher than in Lhasa, and most travelers experience at least some shortness of breath and chill, even on the warmest summer days. A few minutes out of the vehicle for photographs and a careful walk to the cairns are enough for most visitors, after which the road descends toward the long approach to the lakeshore. Warm clothing, sun protection, and a slow pace are essential at this elevation.
For anyone making the journey to Namtso, Nagenla Pass is the moment when the scale of the Tibetan plateau becomes fully apparent. The crossing is brief but powerful, and it sets up the reveal of the lake below in a way that makes the destination feel earned. A stop here is one of the most photographed and most memorable moments on the wider Lhasa itinerary.
