Dianchi Lake, also known in Chinese as Kunming Lake, is the largest freshwater lake in Yunnan province and the sixth-largest in China, a broad, shallow expanse of water that stretches along the southwestern edge of Kunming and has shaped the city's geography, climate, and identity since long before Kunming became a modern provincial capital. The lake is the dominant natural feature of the Kunming basin, and most visitors encounter it in some form during a stay in the city, whether from a park along its shore, from the Western Hills above, or from one of the causeways that cross its northern end.

The lake's appeal lies in its sheer scale and in the contrast between its wide, open water and the ring of mountains that surrounds it. On the western shore rise the Western Hills, whose slopes give the most celebrated panoramic view of the lake, while the northern shore, closest to central Kunming, is lined with parks, promenades, and the long Haigeng Dam, a popular spot for walking and for viewing the migratory black-headed gulls that winter on the lake in large numbers. Boats operate on the lake for sightseeing trips, and the causeways and parks along the shore are popular with local residents for strolling, cycling, and weekend outings, giving the lake an active, lived-in character that contrasts with the more purely scenic lakes elsewhere in China.

For foreign visitors, Dianchi Lake functions less as a single destination than as a continuous presence along the western and southwestern edge of Kunming, and most travelers will experience it as part of a broader excursion to the Western Hills, the ethnic village, or the Haigeng lakeside area rather than as a standalone sight. The lake is at its most photogenic in winter, when the migratory gulls arrive and the parks fill with visitors feeding them, and at sunrise or sunset, when the light on the water and the surrounding mountains is at its most dramatic. Visitors should be aware that the lake has historically faced significant pollution issues from the city's growth, and ongoing restoration efforts continue to shape both the water quality and the experience of visiting its shores.
