The Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum is one of the largest and most ambitious Buddhist cultural complexes in Taiwan, located on the sprawling Fo Guang Shan monastic campus in the hills outside Kaohsiung. The museum sits at the heart of one of the most internationally significant Chinese Buddhist institutions of the modern era, and it has become a major destination for both religious pilgrims and general visitors. Its scale, architecture, and curated exhibits make it one of the most distinctive cultural sites in southern Taiwan.

The Fo Guang Shan movement, founded in the mid-twentieth century, established its headquarters on this hillside and grew over the decades into a global Buddhist organisation with temples, universities, and cultural institutions across many countries. The broader campus includes monastic residences, a Buddhist university, and a series of major worship halls, of which the Main Shrine, the Great Compassion Shrine, the Great Wisdom Shrine, and the Great Vow Shrine are the four principal buildings. Each is set within the landscaped grounds and houses numerous gilded Buddha images produced to a high standard of craftsmanship.

The Buddha Memorial Hall, the part of the complex most visited by tourists, was built to house a revered relic of the historical Buddha and to serve as a centre for Buddhist education and cultural exchange. The approach to the memorial hall is lined with a series of pagoda-like pavilions, and the architecture deliberately references both classical Indian and East Asian Buddhist forms. Inside, the exhibits cover the life of the Buddha, the history of Buddhism across Asia, and the contemporary mission of Fo Guang Shan, with multimedia installations complementing the devotional spaces.

For international visitors, the Buddha Museum is best visited as a full-day excursion from central Kaohsiung. The complex is large enough to require several hours of walking, and the combination of religious architecture, museum exhibits, and landscape design rewards a slow pace. Modest dress is expected. Shuttle buses connect the campus to central Kaohsiung and the nearest transport hubs. Allow the better part of a day; travellers with a deeper interest in Buddhist art or in modern Chinese religious movements could easily spend longer.
