The Datong Museum is the principal comprehensive museum of the Datong region, occupying a large modern building in the city's Pingcheng district. Founded in 1958 and recognized as a national first-class museum in 2020, it houses an extensive collection that traces the long, layered history of the Datong area — from prehistoric settlements through the Northern Wei capital at Pingcheng, the Liao and Jin secondary capital, the Ming frontier garrison, and into the modern era. For travelers looking to contextualize the city's major historical sites, the museum is the best single starting point.

The museum's most important holdings relate to the Northern Wei dynasty, which made Datong its capital in the late fourth century and reigned from here for nearly a century before moving the capital south to Luoyang. The collection includes sculptures, ceramics, tomb figurines, and architectural fragments that complement the Yungang Grottoes, giving visitors a fuller picture of the cosmopolitan, multi-ethnic court that produced them. Many of the objects on display come from major archaeological excavations in the Datong area, including Northern Wei royal tombs and Buddhist temple sites.

The Liao and Jin galleries are equally significant. Datong served as a secondary capital under the Khitan Liao and later under the Jurchen Jin, and the museum's holdings from this period — including Buddhist sculpture, ceramics, metalwork, and funerary objects — illustrate the distinctive religious and artistic culture of north China under the conquest dynasties. The exhibits help visitors understand the origins of monuments such as Huayan Temple and Shanhua Temple, both of which date from this period.

The museum building itself, opened in 2014, is architecturally striking, with an angular, dragon-inspired form that references both the Northern Wei love of dynamic movement and the region's long artistic heritage. Allow two to three hours for a thorough visit. The museum is easily paired with a trip to the Yungang Grottoes or with a walking tour of the Datong Ancient City, and English-language signage, while limited in places, has been steadily improving.
