Shuanglang is a small town on the northeast shore of Erhai Lake that, over the past two decades, has become one of the most fashionable destinations in the Dali region. Perched on a narrow strip of land between the lake and the mountains, with a long view across the water to the Cangshan range, it concentrates within a few square kilometers some of the best lakefront scenery in Yunnan — which is exactly what drew the artists, photographers, and guesthouse owners who transformed it from a sleepy fishing village into a bohemian retreat.

The town's appeal is inseparable from its setting. Sunlight breaking through cloud over the lake, the layered silhouette of the Cangshan peaks behind it, and the still water dotted with fishing boats and white egrets form a composition that has drawn photographers and painters for generations. The harbor area, the old town lanes, and the many small terraces built out over the water all face the same direction, maximizing the view.

Beyond the scenery, Shuanglang has developed into a hub for boutique accommodation, with dozens of design-led guesthouses and small hotels offering lakefront rooms and rooftop bars. The food scene — built around fresh lake fish, Bai-style preserved meats, and Yunnan's abundant wild vegetables and mushrooms — has matured alongside the hospitality industry. It's also the launching point for short ferry trips to Nanzhao Folk Island, which sits just offshore and forms part of the same scenic cluster.

The town has become crowded in peak seasons, and the balance between development and the preservation of the old fishing-village character is an ongoing challenge. For the best experience, visit on weekdays or in shoulder seasons, stay overnight to enjoy the sunset and sunrise without the day-trip crowds, and spend time walking the lakefront rather than clustering at the most photographed viewpoints. Pairing Shuanglang with a trip to nearby Xizhou and the Cangshan cable car makes for a rich two-day Dali itinerary.
