두장옌 풍경구 소개
The Dujiangyan Irrigation System is one of the oldest water-management projects in the world still functioning as originally intended, an achievement that places it among the most remarkable feats of ancient engineering anywhere. Built around 256 BCE under the direction of the Qin-dynasty governor Li Bing and his son, the project tamed the flood-prone Min River without a dam, using a design so effective that it still irrigates the fertile Chengdu Plain today. It's this working, living quality — rather than any grandeur of scale — that makes Dujiangyan such a compelling stop for anyone interested in China's history of ingenuity, and it's often paired with nearby Mount Qingcheng as a single day trip from Chengdu.
The system's genius lies in three interlocking structures. The Fish Mouth Levee splits the river into an outer channel for flood drainage and an inner channel that carries water toward the plain. Downstream, the Flying Sand Weir spills excess floodwater and silt back into the outer river, protecting the irrigation channel from overload. Finally, water is guided through the narrow, hand-carved Bottle-Neck Channel into the irrigation network beyond. Walking the site today, visitors cross suspension bridges over the rushing green water, follow riverside paths shaded by old trees, and can see the river's genuine power up close, especially in summer when flow is highest. By taming the Min River, Dujiangyan turned the once flood-prone Chengdu Plain into what became known as the "Land of Abundance," a fertile basin that has sustained agriculture in the region for over two thousand years.
Beyond the engineering itself, the surrounding park includes temples and pavilions built to honor Li Bing, along with pleasant riverside walkways that make for an easy, scenic stroll regardless of engineering interest. Plan for at least half a day to see the main structures and walk the grounds without feeling rushed, and wear comfortable shoes since the paths involve some elevation change along the riverbank.
For visitors building a Chengdu itinerary around history and landscape rather than pandas and city sights, Dujiangyan offers a rare chance to see a two-thousand-year-old solution still doing its original job, set against the backdrop of the mountains that rise toward Tibet.
문화유산
Dujiangyan sits at the mouth of the Min River gorge in Dujiangyan, Chengdu, built around 256 BCE under the Shu governor Li Bing and his son. It is the oldest surviving grand waterwork in the world to draw water without a dam. Its three parts, the Fish Mouth dividing levee, the Flying Sand spillway, and the Bottle-Neck intake, cleverly use terrain and current to divert floods, flush silt, and channel water for irrigation, turning a once flood- and drought-ridden plain into the "Land of Abundance." Hailed as the patriarch of world water culture, it was inscribed in 2000 as part of the Mount Qingcheng-Dujiangyan World Heritage Site.
관람 안내: Walking among the Fish Mouth, the Flying Sand spillway, and the Bottle-Neck intake, you can see for yourself how Shu craftsmen two thousand years ago worked with the river to split floods and guide its flow; crossing the Anlan suspension bridge over the Min and looking down on the water rushing into the canals, then picturing the old Qingming water-release rite, is the finest way to grasp why Dujiangyan has blessed the land for a thousand years.
