허부마부

Xu Fuma Mansion is a rare and architecturally significant residence tucked inside the lanes of Chaozhou Ancient City. Built for Xu Yu, a Northern Song aristocrat who married Princess De'an, daughter of Emperor Yingzong, the mansion is widely described as one of the few surviving examples of a Song-era official residence in China. It now serves as a small folk-culture museum open to the public.

What makes the site genuinely important is its age and plan. Most surviving ancient houses open to tourists in southern China date from the Ming or Qing; a confirmed Northern Song residential building is unusual, and scholars of Chinese architectural history treat Xu Fuma Mansion as a precious early data point. The compound preserves the basic layout of a high-ranking household of that era, with a sequence of courtyards, side galleries, and reception halls arranged along a central axis.

Today the museum's rooms are given over to displays on Teochew domestic life, kinship customs, marriage traditions, and the material culture of the local gentry. Exhibits cover furniture, wedding items, clothing, household utensils, and explanatory panels on how elite families once lived. The mansion itself — its granite bases, wooden beams, tiled roof, and small inner courtyards — is as much the attraction as the artifacts.

Because Xu Fuma Mansion is small, it is often skipped by rushing visitors, which is a mistake. For travelers with an interest in Chinese domestic architecture, Song history, or the texture of elite Teochew life, it is one of the more specialized rewards of the ancient city. It pairs naturally with nearby Kaiyuan Temple, Jiadi Lane, and the lanes of Paifang Street; allow an unhurried hour to read the captions and look at the joinery. As an unusually early survival of Chinese residential building, the mansion earns its keep on any historically minded Chaozhou itinerary.
