Xilamuren Grassland is one of the most accessible stretches of Mongolian steppe from the major cities of Inner Mongolia, sitting within the Darhan Muminggan United Banner north of Baotou and Hohhot. The name means Yellow River in Mongolian, but the grassland is more commonly called Zhaohe, or Monastery River, after the Qing-era Puhui Temple lamasery that stands on its banks. For first-time visitors who want to experience a Mongolian-style grassland without a long detour, it is the classic choice on a Baotou or Hohhot itinerary.

The landscape here is a sandy, semi-arid steppe rather than the lush green of the popular imagination, with wide open skies, low rolling grasses, and a sense of boundless space. The Puhui Temple, with its carved beams and painted rafters, sits beside the Xilamuren River, and a short walk across the bridge leads up onto Albinbao Hill, from which the grasslands stretch out to every horizon. The simplicity of the scene, sky, river, temple, and grass, makes the experience feel genuinely Mongolian in spirit, especially at dawn or dusk when the light is at its best.

Most visitors experience the grassland as an overnight stay at a yurt camp, where the traditional felt tents are fitted out for travelers and meals of roasted lamb, dairy tea, and other Mongolian specialties are served. Horse riding, archery, and traditional song and dance performances are commonly offered, and during the summer Nadam-style festivals showcase wrestling, horse racing, and other sports central to Mongolian culture. Evenings around the camp, with stars overhead unspoiled by city lights, are a memorable part of the experience.

The grasslands are at their best from June to September, when the weather is warm, the camps are fully open, and the daylight hours are long; outside this window the nights turn cold and many camps close for the season. Bring layers, as even summer nights drop sharply in temperature, and pack sun protection for the exposed daytime. A willingness to rough it a little goes a long way here, as facilities at the camps are simple by urban standards.

Because Xilamuren is the closest major grassland to both Baotou and Hohhot, it gets busy in peak season, especially with domestic tour groups, so travelers seeking a quieter experience may prefer to venture further north to less-visited pastures. For those short on time, however, it offers an efficient and atmospheric taste of Mongolian steppe life, and its combination of accessible location, traditional culture, and wide horizons makes it a fitting centerpiece of any Inner Mongolia journey.
