Taikang Halal Confectionery

Taikang Halal Confectionery was founded in the late Qing dynasty as a long-standing Hui-Muslim food house in Xuzhou; it is said that Bai Chongxi, passing through the city during the Republican era, visited the shop several times and was treated to its honey-glazed Mi San Dao, leaving behind a cherished tale.

In 1997 the Taikang Hui food shop was awarded the title of Chinese Time-Honoured Brand by the Ministry of Internal Trade. Its signature Mi San Dao, Yangjiao Mi, sesame strips and walnut slices form the heart of the classic "Eight Great Sweets" gift box that Xuzhou families carry to relatives and friends at the New Year.

Taikang's Mi San Dao is made of flour, malt sugar and cooking oil, the dough slashed three times before frying and soaking in syrup, glossy outside and flaky within; its Yangjiao Mi is shaped like a ram's horn and filled with honey, embodying the traditional craft of Hui halal pastry.
