Shao Wansheng was founded in 1852, originally named Shao Wanxing and opened by a Ningbo merchant before moving to Nanjing Road, becoming a famous Shanghai purveyor of wine-cured southern provisions.

Its wine-cured fare—wine-marinated chicken, drunken crab and snails, and assorted cured provisions—has long graced old Shanghai's festive tables as classic accompaniments to drink.
