Clay-gold color lacquer is a Ningbo lacquerware art defined by the union of clay-gold technique and color lacquering, with roots in the region's lacquer craft reaching back to the ancient Hemudu culture.

La forme artistique

On a wooden core, lacquer is applied, modeled in relief, gilded with clay-gold and painted, so the raised motifs gleam with gold amid vivid color; it adorned bridal sedans, ritual vessels and dowry pieces with stately splendor.

Importance culturelle

In 2011 Ningbo clay-gold color lacquer entered the third batch of national ICH as a key part of the city's "three golds and an inlay" crafts.
