Site de la vallée extraterrestre de Zhangye

The Zhangye Alien Valley Scenic Area is a themed geological park in Sunan Yugur Autonomous County, north of the main city, presented as part of the wider Zhangye National Geopark and built around an otherworldly landscape of eroded rock formations. The park's name reflects its organizers' framing of the landscape as extraterrestrial in appearance, and the surrounding region brings together a remarkable concentration of different geological features within a relatively small area.

The park's terrain is part of the broader Danxia and colorful hill-country complex that defines this part of the Hexi Corridor, with the same combination of stratified red sandstone, tectonic uplift, and water and wind erosion producing a landscape of layered ridges, towers, and sculpted formations. The marketing of the site emphasizes the strange, unfamiliar quality of these formations, leaning into the alien-planet framing as a way to distinguish it from the more famous Seven-Color Danxia site elsewhere in the geopark.

The wider region surrounding the park is unusually rich in landscape types, with snow-capped mountains, glaciers, forest, grassland, Danxia, colorful hills, gobi desert, wetlands, and dunes all represented within reach of Zhangye, making it one of the more geologically diverse stretches of the Gansu corridor. The Alien Valley site is one of several lesser-known geological attractions in this landscape, and it tends to draw fewer visitors than the headline Danxia park.

For a Zhangye itinerary, the Alien Valley is best treated as an additional stop for visitors with extra time and an interest in geology, rather than a substitute for the Seven-Color Danxia. It suits travelers exploring the wider Sunan area and looking to broaden their sense of the geological variety of the Hexi Corridor beyond the single famous postcard view.
