The bridge and its surrounding setting exist at the intersection of literary memory and contemporary landscape design, and for many visitors the scene here is the single most photographed view in the wider Slender West Lake complex.

The bridge's name comes not from any physical count of twenty-four structures but from a line of Tang-dynasty poetry by the poet Du Mu, which refers to "twenty-four bridges" in the moonlit night. That single line of poetry fixed the phrase in the Chinese literary imagination, and over the centuries it has been associated with Yangzhou even though the historical details behind the name have long been debated. The bridge visible today, with its single elegant stone arch and the surrounding causeway, pavilions, and planted willows, is a modern reconstruction built to give that literary memory a physical form within the lake's wider garden composition.

The design of the surrounding area is built around careful framing. The bridge itself spans a narrow stretch of water between planted banks, with stone steps leading up to its crest and walkways extending along the water's edge on either side. The number twenty-four is worked into the design in a number of ways, through the dimensions of the bridge, the steps, and the layout of the surrounding elements, giving visitors a quiet puzzle of references to discover as they walk through. The composition is deliberately arranged for viewing from particular angles, and approaching the bridge from the right vantage points is part of how the scene is meant to be experienced.

Most visitors spend around thirty minutes to an hour here as part of a wider Slender West Lake visit, often pausing at the bridge for photos before continuing along the lake's causeways. The scene is at its most photogenic in the softer light of early morning or late afternoon, when the reflections on the water are sharpest, and it is noticeably quieter at these times than in the middle of the day.

Because the Twenty-four Bridges sit within the Slender West Lake scenic area itself, the site is best visited as part of a wider walk or boat tour of the lake rather than as a destination on its own.
