Musée de Xuzhou

The Xuzhou Museum is the city's flagship museum, occupying a quiet, landscaped compound in the northern part of central Xuzhou within easy walking distance of Yunlong Mountain and Yunlong Lake. It is the single best place in the city to understand why Xuzhou is called the "hometown of Han culture," and for visitors building an itinerary around Chinese dynastic history, it pairs naturally with a visit to the Han tombs and the Han stone relief galleries nearby.

The core of the collection comes from the royal tombs of the Chu kings of the Western Han period, whose seat of power was here in Pengcheng, as Xuzhou was then known. The museum's signature displays include exquisite jade burial suits sewn with gold thread, finely cast Han bronzes, lacquerware, and weapons, along with terracotta figures and ceremonial objects recovered from excavated royal tombs. The jade suit in particular is one of the finest surviving examples of a burial practice reserved for the highest Han nobility.

Beyond the Han galleries, the museum covers the sweep of Xuzhou's longer story: its strategic role as a frontier between northern and southern China, its importance during the Three Kingdoms and the Tang and Song eras, and its place in the great campaigns of the Chinese civil war in the twentieth century. Temporary exhibitions rotate through a dedicated hall, and the grounds also preserve the historic site of the Qianlong Emperor's temporary palace during his southern tours.

Admission is free, but entry requires an advance reservation and a passport for foreign visitors; timed slots help manage weekend crowds. Plan for two to three hours, longer if you want to read the bilingual panels in depth. A small shop near the exit sells catalogues and replicas, and a tea corner offers a place to rest between galleries.

For travelers who arrive in Xuzhou knowing little of its history, the museum is the perfect orientation stop, best visited before the tombs themselves. Once you have seen the jade suits and the royal regalia here, the chambers cut into Guishan and Shizishan become much easier to imagine as the working palaces of the dead that they once were.
