Village de mazar de Toyuq

Tuyug Mazar Village (Tuyugou Mazha Cun) is a traditional settlement at the southern mouth of the Tuyug canyon in Shanshan County, east of Turpan, Xinjiang. Designated one of China's "Historic and Cultural Villages," it is among the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the region, with a documented history stretching back more than seventeen centuries and a built fabric of rammed-earth houses that has changed little in generations.

The village sits at a religious and cultural crossroads. A short walk from the houses stands the Imam Asim Tomb complex, known locally as the Tuyug Mazar, a pilgrimage site that draws visitors from across Xinjiang and Central Asia, particularly during seasonal festivals. Above the village, on the cliffs of the canyon, sit the Tuyugou Thousand Buddha Caves, a Buddhist cave temple site older and less touristed than the more famous Bezeklik complex, reflecting the layered religious history of the Turpan oasis before and after the arrival of Islam.

Walking through the village, visitors pass narrow lanes shaded by grape trellises, small mosques, and traditional one- and two-story rammed-earth houses whose flat roofs, wooden lintels, and wind-catching ventilation shafts represent a regional architectural tradition adapted to the extreme desert climate. Many of the older structures are no longer occupied but have been left in place, giving the settlement a remarkably complete historic character. A few families continue to farm the narrow strip of irrigated land along the canyon floor, growing grapes, apricots, and melons.

The village is small and can be explored on foot in an hour or so. It is usually paired with the adjacent Tuyugou canyon and the Thousand Buddha Caves on a half-day trip, and it lies on the wider eastern Turpan circuit that also takes in the Gaochang ruins, the Bezeklik Caves, and the Flaming Mountains. For international travelers interested in vernacular architecture and religious history, Tuyug Mazar is one of the most distinctive stops on a Silk Road itinerary in Xinjiang.

Visitors should be respectful of the pilgrimage activity at the mazar and of residents' privacy in the village lanes. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons; summer afternoons are extremely hot, and the village's narrow shaded lanes are best appreciated in the early morning or late in the day.
