Palais souterrain du Dragon à Tai'an (ancienne grande faille du mont Tai)

The Tai'an Underground Dragon Palace, formerly known as the Mount Tai Great Rift Valley, is a karst cave and underground river system tucked into the foothills southwest of Tai'an. The attraction is the centrepiece of the larger Baotailong tourist resort, which sits within easy reach of both the Mount Tai scenic area and the major highways connecting Tai'an with Jinan to the north and Qufu to the south.

Geologically, the site is a textbook example of a limestone landscape shaped by millions of years of water erosion. Visitors descend into a cool, dimly lit world of stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone formations, where the central feature is a long navigable underground river. Electric boats carry passengers along part of the river through chambers that widen and narrow dramatically, with subdued lighting emphasising the cavern's naturally sculpted rock. The watercourse is among the longest accessible underground rivers of its kind in northern China.

Above ground, the surrounding resort area offers the usual supporting attractions — landscaped walkways, rest pavilions, and family-oriented leisure facilities — but the cave itself is the genuine draw. The constant underground temperature makes this a popular escape from Tai'an's hot summer afternoons and a workable rainy-day alternative when a planned Mount Tai climb has to be postponed.

Visitors with mobility concerns should note that the cave route involves a combination of stairs, boardwalks, and the boat segment, some of it over uneven or wet surfaces. Allow around two hours for a relaxed visit, more if you plan to explore the broader resort. As with all karst caves, photography can be difficult in the low light, so it is worth slowing down and simply enjoying the strange, quiet scale of the place. The Underground Dragon Palace is best understood as a geological curiosity rather than a cultural site — a useful complement to Tai'an's many temples and mountain paths.
