Ancienne rue Dongmen

Dongmen Pedestrian Street is the historic commercial core of Shenzhen, a dense network of pedestrian lanes in the Luohu district that is widely described as the "root" of the modern city. Long before Shenzhen became a Special Economic Zone in 1980, Dongmen was the main market and shopping street of the old Bao'an County town that predated the modern metropolis.

Today the area is the city's oldest pedestrian shopping zone, a layered environment of restored Republican-era façades, mid-1990s shopping blocks, and contemporary glass-and-steel retail complexes. Tens of thousands of shops and stalls are packed into a few square blocks, selling apparel, electronics, accessories, beauty products, snack food, and virtually everything else retailed in modern China. Several of the larger malls anchor the area, but the back lanes are where Dongmen's character really lives.

The street is a national-model pedestrian street, a designation that brings with it a degree of municipal investment in cleanliness, lighting, and safety. Evening brings the area to its busiest, with night markets, snack streets, and light displays running late into the night. Cantonese, Teochew, and northern-Chinese snacks jostle for position along the food lanes, while cheap-fashion stalls and youth-culture boutiques line the rest.

For international travellers, Dongmen is one of the most rewarding places in Shenzhen to feel the texture of contemporary Chinese mass consumption. The contrast with the glossy luxury malls of the central business district is sharp, and the sheer density of retail and foot traffic is itself an experience. Bargaining is still common in the smaller stalls, and the lanes around the main squares turn over new merchandise quickly.

Dongmen sits directly above Laojie station on Line 1 of the Shenzhen Metro, making it one of the easiest shopping destinations in the city to reach. Visit in the late afternoon and stay into the evening for the most energetic version of the area, and come prepared for crowds.
