À propos de Rue Zhong

Middle Street (Zhong Jie) is the historic main shopping street of Shenyang, a four-hundred-metre pedestrian corridor running east-west through the centre of the old Fangcheng district. It is widely regarded as the oldest continuous commercial street in northeast China, and the most important single place to feel the contemporary pulse of the city.

Laid out in 1625 when the Manchus founded their Shengjing capital around the new Imperial Palace, Middle Street was originally the main east-west axis of the Qing-era city plan. Over four centuries it has been rebuilt many times, but the route has remained fixed, and the street is today lined with department stores, shopping malls, heritage storefronts, snack stalls, and modern flagship outlets standing shoulder to shoulder.

The street is recognised at national level as a "demonstration pedestrian street", the highest official rank for a commercial walking zone in China. Time-honoured local brands — Ma Family Shaomai, Old Bian Dumpling, and several others recognised as intangible cultural heritage — sit alongside international fashion brands and bubble-tea chains, while night markets and lantern festivals bring the street to life after dark.

Walking Middle Street is the easiest way to encounter modern Shenyang at its most energetic. Strolling east from the Imperial Palace, the visitor moves within minutes from the silence of the Qing courtyards into a wall of neon, street-food steam, and crowds. The architecture along the way is a layered record of the city's eras: late-Qing shopfronts, Republican-era stone buildings, Soviet-inspired mid-century blocks, and the glass towers of the present.

For international travellers, Middle Street is the obvious place for an evening meal, a snack crawl, and an unfiltered slice of contemporary northeast-Chinese urban life.
