Temple de Zhaxi

Zaki Temple is a small but very popular temple on the northern outskirts of Lhasa, best known as a shrine to the deity of wealth, and it is one of the most frequented local places of worship in the city. Where the great monasteries of the Lhasa area are visited primarily by pilgrims and tourists, Zaki draws a steady daily crowd of local residents who come to make offerings and ask for prosperity in the practical matters of business, work, and family life.

The temple's popularity gives it an atmosphere that is different from the larger, more formal monastic sites. Tuesday and Thursday mornings, traditionally the busiest days, see long queues of worshipers carrying bottles of liquor and bolts of khata silk scarves, the offerings customarily presented at this shrine. The architecture and furnishings of Zaki Temple are typical of the Lhasa religious landscape, with painted gateways, a walled courtyard, and a main chapel hung with silk banners and lit by butter lamps. The principal image of the wealth deity sits at the center of the hall, surrounded by offerings accumulated over years of continuous devotion. For travelers, Zaki Temple offers a chance to see a working local shrine rather than a monument, and the visit provides a counterpoint to the grand scale of the Potala and the Jokhang.
