À propos de Spectacle « Rêve de Dongjing sous les Song »

"Great Song Tokyo Dream" is a large-scale open-air performance staged nightly on the central lake of Kaifeng's Millennium City Park. Conceived by the acclaimed live-performance producer Mei Shaiyuan and directed by Zhang Rensheng, the show is one of the most ambitious outdoor theatrical productions in China and a flagship cultural offering of Henan province. It uses the park's reconstructed Song streetscape as a backdrop and transforms the lake into a vast liquid stage, with a cast of more than seven hundred performers.

The structure of the eighty-minute piece is built from classical Song-dynasty lyric poetry (ci). Eight well-known poems, including "Yu Mei Ren", "Zui Dong Feng", "Die Lian Hua", and "Man Jiang Hong", provide both the musical score and the narrative scaffolding. Each becomes one movement in a six-part cycle that moves through the rise, splendour, and fall of the Northern Song capital, drawing on two famous sources for its imagery: Zhang Zeduan's scroll painting Along the River During the Qingming Festival and Meng Yuanlao's memoir Dream of Hua in the Eastern Capital. The result is an impressionistic, tableaux-style retelling of the Song golden age rather than a linear historical drama.

Technically, the production is a showcase of contemporary Chinese stagecraft. Lighting, projection, hydraulics, and pyrotechnics are choreographed to give the impression that an entire medieval city has come briefly back to life on the water. The visual ambition is large, and the show is designed to register even from a distance, which makes the tiered lakeside seating the focal point of the evening at the park. The soundtrack blends traditional instrumentation with cinematic orchestration, and the poems are sung rather than spoken.

For foreign visitors without Chinese, the literal content of the lyrics will be largely inaccessible, but the production is staged in a way that prioritises spectacle and emotion over verbal narrative. It functions well as a sensory introduction to Song aesthetics and as the evening counterpart to a day spent walking the park. Tickets are sold separately from park admission and should be booked in advance during peak seasons and public holidays.
