The Bianhe River Cruise in Kaifeng offers a slow-water perspective on the old imperial capital, following a roughly 2.5-kilometre stretch of the Imperial Canal that links two of the city's principal lakes, Longting Lake and Lord Bao Lake. The route is short, but it threads through the densest concentration of historic and scenic sites in Kaifeng, making the cruise one of the more efficient and atmospheric ways to grasp how the city's major monuments fit together.

The banks along the canal are lined with landmarks. Longting Lake sits at one end of the route, surrounded by several top-tier scenic areas, and beneath the water, according to archaeologists, lie the buried remains of the imperial palaces of six successive dynasties. Lord Bao Lake anchors the other end, with its own cluster of historic attractions and nationally protected monuments, including the temple honouring the Song magistrate Bao Zheng. Between the two, the canal passes restored period streetscapes, gardens, and the lantern-lit Xisi Night Market, which opens directly onto one of the cruise piers.

The cruise itself is designed for sightseeing rather than transport. Boats are typically traditional-style, low-profile vessels suited to the calm canal water, and the pace allows for photography and a guided narration of the landmarks along the route. The experience is most popular in the early evening, when the canal-side buildings are illuminated and the night market at the pier begins to open. The contrast between the historic architecture and the lively street-food scene at the dock captures, in compressed form, much of what makes Kaifeng distinctive among Chinese historic cities.

For foreign visitors, the cruise works particularly well as a transition between daytime sightseeing and an evening meal. A late-afternoon departure from Longting, with a one-way ticket to the Xisi pier, drops travellers directly at one of the city's best-known night markets, where Kaifeng's regional cuisine can be sampled in a single sitting. The whole loop, including time at both ends, can comfortably be slotted into a half-day itinerary centred on Kaifeng's old city.
