Victoria Harbour is the deep, sheltered stretch of water between Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon peninsula that has shaped the entire identity of Hong Kong since its emergence as a trading port, and it remains the geographic fact around which the city is organized. The combination of one of the world's busiest natural harbors with the dramatic wall of towers rising on both shores has produced one of the most famous urban waterfronts anywhere, and the harbour remains the single most photographed element of the Hong Kong cityscape.

The harbor can be experienced from many angles, from the elevated harbor front promenades that line both the Central and Tsim Sha Tsui shores to the decks of the ferries that crisscross its waters and the viewing terraces perched on the Peak and in the tall towers of both sides. The Star Ferry, which crosses the harbor between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui, is itself one of the celebrated ways to spend time on the water, and many travelers rank even the short ferry crossing among the highlights of their visit.

For a Hong Kong itinerary, time spent on or around the harbour is essential rather than optional, and it is best built into the day across several small experiences, a ferry crossing, a sunset walk along a promenade, an evening viewing of the skyline light show, rather than concentrated into a single visit. The harbor is the city's organizing feature, and engaging with it directly is the surest way to understand why Hong Kong looks and feels the way it does.
