Leidongping is a high-elevation hub on the upper slopes of Mount Emei and the practical turnaround point for road vehicles before the final push to the Golden Summit. At roughly 2,400 meters above sea level, it sits in the mountain's subalpine forest belt and serves as the main arrival zone for travelers heading to the summit by the popular bus-and-cableway route. For most visitors, Leidongping is where the upper mountain begins.

The name — roughly Thunder Cave Hollow — refers to a cavern in the area that local tradition associated with thunder and dragons. While the cave itself is no longer the main draw, the surrounding landscape is. Dense conifer and rhododendron forest rolls across the ridge, and the air is noticeably thinner and cooler than at the base. On clear days, views open through the trees toward the surrounding peaks and across the Sichuan Basin.

For most travelers, the Leidongping experience is about the climb from the bus parking area up to the cableway lower station. The path climbs steadily through forest for roughly a kilometer and a half, and this stretch is where visitors most reliably encounter the mountain's famous Tibetan macaques. The monkeys are a genuine feature of the upper mountain but can be aggressive around food; treat them with care, keep snacks zipped away, and give them space on the trail.

Logistically, Leidongping is where you choose your upper-mountain mode. From here you either continue on foot up the stone path to the Golden Summit — a serious climb of several hours — or take the short walk to the cableway station and ride to the top in minutes. Either way, it is the natural last stop before the summit ridge.

For visitors planning a Mount Emei itinerary, Leidongping rewards a slow, attentive passage: the forest is genuinely beautiful, the macaques are memorable when treated with appropriate caution, and the air at this elevation carries a different quality than the subtropical base. Combined with the Golden Summit above and the Buddhist temples below, it is a key piece of the upper-mountain experience on one of China's most important UNESCO sites.
