Pièce immersive « Dunhuang mélodieuse »

Yuedong Dunhuang is an immersive theatrical production that takes the buried musical and dance heritage of the Mogao Caves as its subject, staging them inside a setting designed to recreate the feeling of entering an ancient grotto. Billed as the world's first cave-style immersive drama, the work traces its inspiration back to Dunhuang culture through a close reading of the cave murals and the ancient manuscripts once housed in the Library Cave.

The production's creative team drew on research into the instruments and musical notation depicted or described in the caves, reviving the sounds of the five-stringed pipa, the paixiao, and the lotus-shaped ruan, alongside replicas of instruments copied from Dunhuang's own ancient models. Against this sonic backdrop, performers recreate dances attested in the murals, including the whirling Sogdian spin, the waist-drum and pipa dances, and the dances of the kalavinka bird, all set to melodies adapted from ancient Dunhuang music scores and Central Asian tunes.

The story follows a young man from the Western Regions named Bai on his quest for artistic mastery, using his journey as a thread to connect the musical and choreographic set pieces. High-tech staging, including holographic projection and three-dimensional flying rigging, helps dissolve the boundary between audience and action, placing spectators inside the scenes rather than in front of them.

Throughout, the aim is to reconstruct the great spectacles of music and dance preserved on the cave walls, giving modern viewers a sense of the soundscape that once filled Dunhuang's temples and caravanserais. The result is less a conventional show than an attempt to make a vanished performing tradition audible and visible again.
