Zoo de Xiangshi à Dongguan

Dongguan Xiangshi Zoo, in the eastern part of the city, is a mid-sized 4A-rated zoo that focuses on displaying animals in spacious, semi-natural habitats rather than in tight cages. The park uses a combination of large open enclosures and mixed-species zones, an approach designed to let animals show more of their natural behavior than is possible in older-style Chinese zoos. For visiting families, it is one of the more relaxed animal parks in the Greater Bay Area.

The collection spans species from across Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Visitors can typically see Asian elephants, giraffes, tigers, lions, and black bears, along with smaller primates, birds, and reptiles. Elephant and sea-lion shows are scheduled through the day and are among the most popular features for domestic visitors; for travelers from countries where performing-animal shows are no longer common, these are likely to feel dated and may be skipped in favor of the walking exhibits.

The landscaping is a real strength. Wide paths wind between themed zones planted to suggest each species' habitat, with shaded rest areas and viewing shelters at intervals. Mornings are the best time to visit — most animals are more active before the midday heat, and the park is quieter. Allow a half day to see the main zones at a reasonable pace, longer if you are visiting with children who want to linger.

For international travelers, Xiangshi Zoo is not a headline Dongguan attraction — heritage sites like Nanshe and the city's Pearl River Delta cuisine are stronger draws — but it works well as a family-friendly option or as a rest-day alternative when traveling with kids. It is easy to reach from central Dongguan and can be combined with nearby parks or shopping areas. Visitors with strong opinions on animal welfare may prefer to skip the performance elements and focus on the walkthrough zones, where the husbandry standards are noticeably better than at older Chinese municipal zoos.
