Faille de Longshui

The Longshuixia Fissure Gorge (Longshuixia Difeng) is a deep, narrow karst canyon in Wulong County, part of the same UNESCO-recognized South China Karst complex that includes the nearby Three Natural Bridges. Forged over hundreds of thousands of years of tectonic uplift and water erosion, it offers visitors the rare experience of walking through the earth itself — descending into a sheer-walled gorge where the sky shrinks to a thin strip above and underground streams thread the shadows below.

The visit begins with an elevator ride down into the canyon, followed by a boardwalk trail that hugs the cliff wall, sometimes passing under overhangs and through spray-misted tunnels. The geology is the highlight: vertical limestone walls towering fifty to two hundred meters above the path, collapsed boulders the size of houses, narrow "sky-lit" passages where light pours down into the gloom, and waterfalls cascading directly onto the walkway in places. The temperature inside the gorge stays cool even at the height of summer, which makes it a particularly welcome stop during Chongqing's famously hot months.

Because Longshuixia sits in the same scenic cluster as the Three Natural Bridges, the two are usually visited together on a single day trip from the Wulong tourist center. The contrast between the two sites is part of the appeal — the Three Natural Bridges show karst geology at its most soaring and expansive, while Longshuixia shows it at its most compressed and intimate. Together they give a complete picture of how water and time shape limestone landscapes.

Practical tips: wear grippy shoes, as the boardwalk is often wet, and bring a light rain layer for the spray zones. The walk through the fissure takes about ninety minutes and is one-way, so plan accordingly. Photographers will find the narrow light beams and moss-covered walls endlessly rewarding, especially mid-morning and mid-afternoon when the sun angle strikes the canyon walls.
