Hongyadong is one of Chongqing's most recognizable landmarks, a towering eleven-story stilt-house complex (diaojiaolou) built into the cliff face of the Cangbai Road area in Yuzhong, where the Jialing River meets the Yangtze. Rooted in the traditional Bayu architecture of the old river town, the rebuilt complex rises in overlapping timber eaves, lantern-lit balconies, and steep stone stairways, evoking — and often compared to — the bathhouse from Miyazaki's Spirited Away when illuminated at night.

The site is arranged as a vertical neighborhood. The lowest level opens directly onto the riverfront promenade, while the upper levels spill out onto a busy street above, a layout that perfectly captures Chongqing's singular relationship with its terrain. Each floor is given over to a different layer of urban life: riverside cafés and bars at the base, snack streets and hot pot restaurants in the middle, craft boutiques and folk-culture displays higher up, and a panoramic terrace at the top with views across the Jialing toward Jiangbe and the city's forest of skyscrapers.

For visitors, Hongyadong is both a free public viewpoint and a culinary landmark. The dense cluster of hot pot restaurants here — many with terraces cantilevered over the cliff — makes it one of the best places in the city to try Chongqing's signature numbing-and-spicy broth with the river glowing just beyond the table. The lower promenade, by contrast, is the favorite spot in the city to photograph the full stacked silhouette of the complex as it lights up in layered tiers after dark.

Evenings are when Hongyadong is at its most theatrical, and also its most crowded. The illumination typically switches on around dusk, and the narrow corridors and elevator shafts fill quickly. Visiting just before sunset lets travelers watch the transition from daylight panorama to neon spectacle without contending with the largest crowds. Pairing Hongyadong with a walk to the nearby Jiefangbei pedestrian street or a Two Rivers Cruise makes for a memorable evening in the heart of the mountain city.
