Parc forestier national de Saihanba

Saihanba National Forest Park is a vast planted forest on the high plateau north of Chengde, one of the largest artificial forests in the world and a landmark of ecological restoration in northern China. Stretching across the rolling heights where Hebei meets Inner Mongolia, it covers a landscape that was once degraded grassland and has been transformed over decades into a sea of pine, larch, and birch. For travelers undertaking a self-drive loop of the Bashang region, it is one of the iconic stops.

The park's appeal lies in its scale and its seasons. Endless rows of conifers roll across the hills, broken by meadows, small lakes, and patches of wildflower, and the air is sharply clean at this altitude. In summer the forest is cool and green, offering relief from the heat of the lowlands, while autumn transforms the larch into bands of gold that draw photographers from across the country. Winter snows bury the plateau in white, and spring brings the first green haze back to the trees.

Most visitors explore by car, since the sights are spread across a large area and there is no single circuit that can be walked in a day. A joint ticket system usually links Saihanba with neighboring Yudaokou, so plan your route to cover both rather than treating them as separate destinations. Allow a full day at minimum, and consider an overnight stay in one of the small townships inside or near the park if you want to catch sunrise or sunset over the forest. Bring layers, as the plateau cools off dramatically after dark even in summer.

Saihanba fits naturally into a wider Bashang and Mulan Paddock itinerary, and for many travelers it is the scenic highlight of a multi-day driving loop out of Chengde or Beijing. The forest is less a single attraction than an entire landscape to drive through, and the joy of the visit is in the long views, the clean air, and the strange, hard-won beauty of trees planted by hand across a windy plateau.
