Qingchuifeng National Forest Park is a forest and rocky-peak scenic area on the eastern edge of Chengde, named for its signature formation, the Hammer Peak, a slender stone column that rises above the forest canopy in a shape that does indeed resemble an upright mallet. Visible from many points across the city, the peak has long been one of the natural landmarks that defines the Chengde skyline, and the surrounding park offers one of the easier green escapes close to town. For travelers with a free half-day in Chengde, it is a convenient and rewarding stop.

The park's network of paths leads through mixed forest and up to viewpoints of the Hammer Peak and other strange rock formations carved out of the same sandstone ridges. The scenery combines rugged geology with pleasant woodland, and from the higher spots visitors can look out across Chengde to the Mountain Resort and the Outlying Temples on the far side of the valley. The walking is moderate rather than strenuous, and there are quieter corners away from the main viewpoints where the forest feels genuinely peaceful.

Plan for a half-day visit. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, when temperatures are mild and the light is at its best on the rock faces; summer is hot but the forest offers welcome shade. Sturdy shoes are a good idea, since the path up to the peak involves some stone steps and uneven sections. A cable car is available for visitors who prefer to skip the climb, though walking gives a closer look at the geology.

Because of its location close to the Mountain Resort, Qingchuifeng pairs naturally with the UNESCO heritage zone and works well as a light nature break between temple visits. It is not on the scale of the great imperial sights, but for travelers who want to see the natural landmark that has watched over Chengde for centuries, it is a worthwhile and easy addition to any city itinerary.
