Porte de Guangji

Guangji Gate Tower, known to locals as Guangji Lou or Dongmen Lou (the East Gate Tower), is the principal historic gate of Chaozhou's old city wall and one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. It stands at the eastern edge of Chaozhou Ancient City, directly facing Guangji Bridge and the Han River, and traditionally served as the formal entrance for visitors arriving from the east bank. Of the historic gate towers that once ringed the city, Guangji is regarded as the most important.

The present structure, rebuilt and restored over the centuries, is a multi-eaved tower rising above a solid stone gate base. The form is typical of fortified Ming and Qing gatehouses in southern China, but its silhouette — wide, low, and stretched across the approach to the bridge — makes it the visual anchor of the old riverside. From the ramparts you get the classic view over the bridge pavilions, the floating pontoon section, and the line of hills beyond the river.

For most visitors, Guangji Gate Tower functions as a way-finder and photo stop rather than a standalone museum. Passing through it, you cross directly from the riverside embankment into Paifang Street and the dense grid of the ancient city, where many of Chaozhou's most important sites — Kaiyuan Temple, the Xu Fuma Mansion, the lanes of Jiadi — lie within a few minutes' walk. In the other direction, the gate opens onto the riverfront promenade, which fills in the evening with families waiting for the bridge light show.

The tower is best photographed in the late afternoon, when the stone base catches warm light and the upturned eaves stand out against the sky. After dark it is lit from below and forms a backdrop for the nightly Guangji Bridge light-and-music show. For any traveler building a walking route through Chaozhou Ancient City, Guangji Gate Tower is the natural hinge between the river, the bridge, and the old town's interior.
