Parc géologique national volcanique de l'île Weizhou

Weizhou Island Volcano National Geopark is the formal protected area covering the geological core of Weizhou Island, encompassing the volcanic and marine-erosion landscapes that make the island one of the most scientifically important and visually striking sites on the South China coast. As the geologically youngest volcanic island in China, Weizhou preserves a remarkably complete record of volcanic activity and coastal change, and the geopark framework brings together the island's most dramatic and most informative sites into a single protected and interpreted system.

The island was built over four major phases of volcanic eruption, and almost every stretch of its coast carries evidence of that fiery birth. Layered basalts, twisted lava channels, gas-bubble cavities, mineral staining, and fragments of older rock embedded in younger flows are all visible at sites around the shoreline, and in places the original craters and eruption vents can still be identified. The geopark's interpreted trails and signs help visitors read these features in the field, turning a beach walk into a tour through the island's deep history.

Equally important are the marine-erosion landforms that have reshaped the volcanic rock over the centuries since the eruptions ended. Sea cliffs, arches, sea caves, wave-cut platforms, and dramatic sea stacks are carved into the soft basalt all around the island, and the constant action of the South China Sea continues to shape the coast today. At sites such as Crocodile Mountain on the southwest shore and Five-Color Beach on the east, these erosional features combine with the volcanic bedrock to produce landscapes that look unlike anywhere else in coastal China.

The rocks themselves are unusually varied in form and color. Mineral staining has painted many of the outcrops in reds, ochres, and pale grays, while wave-polished sections reveal the dark basalt beneath, and the sand and pebbles on the beaches include a mix of shell, coral, and volcanic fragments. The visual variety, combined with the relative accessibility of the outcrops, makes the geopark a rewarding destination for geology students, photographers, and curious general visitors alike, and the island's status as a natural laboratory for volcanic study is widely recognized in the scientific literature.

The geopark is best experienced as part of a multi-day stay on Weizhou rather than a day trip from Beihai, since the most rewarding sites are spread around the island and benefit from slow exploration at varied states of tide and light. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for walking the rocky shorelines, while summer brings warm water and the most reliable boat access but also the possibility of rough weather. For international visitors with an interest in earth science, landscape photography, or simply dramatic coastline, the geopark is the intellectual and scenic backbone of any Weizhou Island visit.
