Taiyuan Yangge has deep roots in the folk song-and-dance tradition of Jinzhong, passed down through generations in urban and rural Taiyuan and closely tied to agricultural customs and festival activities—an important component of Shanxi folk arts.

Yangge troupes range from dozens to hundreds of performers in colorful costumes carrying fans and handkerchiefs, twisting and swaying to the beat of bass drums, gongs and cymbals in varied patterns divided into 'big formations' and 'small formations.'

Importancia cultural

Taiyuan Yangge is a Shanxi provincial intangible heritage, carrying the farming culture and folk beliefs of the Jinzhong plain, and one of the most popular folk art performances at Spring Festival in Taiyuan and the surrounding region.
