Beilu Bangzi (Northern-Route Bangzi Opera)
PCI nacional · Lista 1.ªBeilu Bangzi is one of Shanxi's 'four great bangzi' operas, popular around Datong and Xinzhou in the north and among the region's most representative grand-opera forms. It grew from the northward spread of Puzhou bangzi combined with northern-Shanxi dialect and folk music, with a long history and clearly defined schools.
Marked by the beat of the bangzi clapper and a high, impassioned, robust vocal style, it excels at historical themes and heroic figures, with a full complement of role-types and fiery staging in a strongly northern operatic manner. Its singing, speech, acting and combat all demand real skill, and it has produced many noted performers.
Beilu Bangzi is inscribed on the national list of intangible cultural heritage and is an important form for studying Shanxi's bangzi vocal system and the development of northern Chinese opera. Datong maintains a Beilu Bangzi and Shuahaier Opera Protection and Transmission Center devoted to its safeguarding, transmission and performance.
Beilu Bangzi is transmitted mainly across northern Shanxi centered on Datong and Xinzhou, and remains a traditional grand opera often staged in Datong.
