Fengxi Porcelain Firing Technique

The Fengxi porcelain firing technique is the traditional ceramic craft of Chaozhou's Fengxi area; Chaozhou, long called 'China's porcelain capital', has a deep ceramic history. The technique entered the second batch of national ICH in 2008.

Fengxi porcelain-making encompasses throwing, moulding, openwork carving, hand-sculpting, incising and applied modelling; most distinctive are its openwork 'tonghua' and sculpted porcelain flowers — the pierced ware delicately latticed, the flowers as thin as cicada wings and lifelike, often combined in a single piece of astonishing intricacy.

Fengxi porcelain is the summit of Chaozhou ceramic craft, found in display art-porcelain and woven into everyday-ware production alike, underpinning both the industry and the cultural renown of Chaozhou as 'China's porcelain capital'.

Fine openwork and sculpted-flower porcelain can be seen in the porcelain workshops and museums of Chaozhou's Fengxi area.
