Museo Provincial de Hubei

The Hubei Provincial Museum is the flagship cultural institution of Hubei province, set in a spacious green compound beside East Lake in the Wuchang district of Wuhan. As one of the most important museums in China, it holds extraordinary collections that illuminate the ancient Chu culture and the long civilizations of the Yangtze region, and it is the single best place in the city to grasp the deep history behind modern Wuhan. The museum's most celebrated treasure is the set of bronze chime bells from the tomb of the Marquis Yi of Zeng, dating from the fifth century BC. The bells are not only remarkably preserved but also musically complete, with each bell able to produce two distinct tones, allowing modern musicians to play ancient melodies on them. Regular performances reproduce the sound of the chimes, giving visitors a chance to hear music from more than two thousand years ago, an experience found almost nowhere else in the world.
