Roca Shiweiyan

Shiwei Rock, whose name translates to Stone Mast Rock, is one of the most striking landmarks of the Nanxi River region, set near the town of Hesheng in the hills of Yongjia County, Wenzhou. As a distinctive volcanic landform rising from a green valley, it is widely regarded as one of the must-see sights of the Nanxi River area, and its unusual shape makes it instantly recognizable in photographs of the region.

The rock itself is a freestanding peak of reddish volcanic stone, more than three hundred meters tall, rising almost vertically from the valley floor like the mast of a ship, which is what gives it its name. The stone shifts subtly in color and appearance as you move around it, sometimes catching the warm afternoon light and sometimes blending into the surrounding green slopes. The scale is genuinely impressive up close, and the contrast between the lone pillar of rock and the gentler forested hills around it gives the site its dramatic character.

Visitors can explore the area on foot along a network of trails and boardwalks that wind through the forest and along the riverbank, with a short boat ride across a small pool providing a particularly scenic approach. From the base, a path leads up the side of the rock and through a narrow gorge, opening onto quiet stretches of clear water and wooded cliffs. The setting is cooler and greener than the open coast, making it a pleasant escape in the heat of summer.

Shiwei Rock sits about half an hour by road from the main tourist base at Yantou, so it works well as a day trip combined with other upper Nanxi River sights, such as the Longwantan pools and the surrounding old villages. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for the walking, and the river is most dramatic after rainfall. As a single, photogenic, and memorable landmark of the Nanxi River valley, it is one of the most rewarding short stops in the Wenzhou interior.
