Mansión del príncipe (Junwang Fu)

The Prince's Mansion (Junwang Fu) in Turpan, Xinjiang, is a reconstructed residence associated with the local princely house that governed the Turpan region under the Qing dynasty. The complex stands in the older part of Turpan city and serves as a tangible reminder of the late-imperial political order in the oasis, when Turpan's rulers held dual standing as hereditary local leaders and as officials of the Chinese imperial administration.

The buildings visitors see today are a careful reconstruction of the original residence, which fell into disrepair in the twentieth century. The plan follows the conventions of a Chinese official residence, with a sequence of courtyards aligned along a central axis and side halls for reception, family quarters, and administration, but it also incorporates details drawn from regional Uyghur residential traditions, including shaded verandas, carved wooden screens, and the use of rammed earth in the enclosing walls. Inside, a series of rooms has been furnished to suggest the functions of the original establishment: a reception hall where the prince met petitioners and visitors, a small ancestral shrine, family living quarters, and side rooms displaying clothing, documents, and household objects. Wall panels in Chinese and English narrate the history of the princely house, its relations with the Qing court, and the role the residence played in the administrative geography of Xinjiang in the late imperial period.

The gardens surrounding the residence are shaded by mature trees and threaded by a small channel fed from the oasis irrigation network. The contrast between the high-walled formality of the residence and the relaxed greenery of the garden is a recurring feature of elite residential architecture in the Turpan Basin, and it is one of the quiet pleasures of a visit here.

The Prince's Mansion is a relatively compact site, usually visited in under an hour. It lies close to the city center and can be paired easily with the Turpan Museum, the Karez Folk Park, or the Jiaohe Ruins on a one-day city itinerary.
