Sobre Templo de la Tierra Pura (Jingtu)
Jingtu Temple, the "Pure Land Temple," is a Buddhist religious complex on the heights near Tianshui. Although its current appearance is largely modern, the site reflects the long cycle of destruction and reconstruction that defines much of China's religious heritage, and it now functions as an active regional center of Pure Land Buddhist practice.
The original temple was completely dismantled in 1971, and its steles, plaques, and couplets were lost. Beginning in the 1980s, resident monks and lay supporters raised funds to rebuild the complex, eventually investing decades of work and substantial donations into a full restoration. The present temple is laid out as three successive courtyard-style halls of increasing depth, a configuration typical of larger Chinese Buddhist monasteries. More recent additions include a Hall of Arhats, a sutra library, and a ceremonial gate, giving the site a sense of ongoing expansion rather than frozen restoration.
The result is a working monastery rather than a museum piece. The architecture is heavy and ceremonial, with deep-eaved roofs, painted beams, and large gilt Buddha images in the main halls. Because the complex was rebuilt essentially from nothing, its scale and uniformity feel newer and more ambitious than the city's surviving Ming-era temples, a useful contrast for visitors interested in how religious architecture is being reimagined in twenty-first century Gansu.
For a foreign traveler, Jingtu Temple is a quiet stop best appreciated as a counterpoint to Tianshui's ancient sites. Photography is generally welcome in the courtyards but should respect ongoing ceremonies. Combine the visit with a nearby mountain temple or the Tianshui Ancient City for a half-day loop focused on living religious practice rather than archaeology.
